Arizona Oceanfront: Khizr Kahn, the Constitution, and the Democrat Party
OK, I admit it, I did not in fact watch the Democrat National Convention. I happen to have a life, and a job and a few other minor details that got in the way of feasting my eyes, for several hours a night, on all the...stuff that is the DNC.
I did however catch the main highlights, most of the stuff that made it into the news, including the Khizr Kahn incident. I honestly, didn’t think I would get a chance to comment on this. However the story just would not go away.
There were many things during the DNC that made one want to pound one’s thumb with a hammer since that would’ve felt better than watching. However, when Mr. Kahn drew out his pocket Constitution and offered to lend it to Donald Trump, that feeling increased exponentially (for those unfamiliar with the incident get caught up here).
The audience exploded in applause at Mr. Kahn’s clever quip pointing out Trump’s lack of understanding of the Constitution (incidentally, an accurate accusation). The Democrats present at the DNC were ecstatic, screaming and cheering.
Democrat 1: “Yay for the Constitution!”
Democrat 2: “Psst...what’s a Constitution?”
Democrat 1: “Darned if I know, but everyone else is clapping!”
We’ve pointed out the stunning hypocrisy of the modern day liberal Democrat. But nothing could possibly demonstrate that hypocrisy more than this incident.
Anyone who calls themselves a Democrat while holding up the Constitution as their guidebook would do just as well to attempt to sell some ocean front property in Arizona.
What does being a Democrat mean? It means that to some degree or another, you subscribe to the beliefs and policies promoted by the Democrat party. Those beliefs and policies are encoded in something known as the Democratic Party Platform.
Raise income, create good-paying jobs, expanding access to affordable housing and home ownership, ending poverty, securing environment and climate justice, making debt-free college a reality, providing relief from student debt, guaranteeing universal preschool, securing universal healthcare (thought we already did that?), reducing prescription drug costs, limiting the 2nd Amendment, ensuring federal funding of abortion... (there’s more, but we have space restraints)
If you read the Democrat Party Platform and then the Constitution, you will see two very different visions for the proper role of government.
The Constitution is designed to be a limit on what government can do while it carries out its one duty - to protect the rights of its citizens. The Constitution was the American people saying to the government, “While you are protecting our rights, here is what we allow you to do, and here is what you are not allowed to do.”
The Democrat Party Platform lays out a vision where government’s duties go far beyond merely protecting your rights. The Democrat Platform sees a government that
-Gives you free preschool, wage raises and free healthcare
-Makes your student debt disappear
-Makes sure the evil free market doesn’t charge you too much money for prescription drugs
And the list goes on.
As you can see, the Constitution is the guideline for a government that protects your rights. The Democrat Party Platform is the guideline for a government that attempts to provide for your rights while trampling and destroying the rights of others.
This leaves us with the question, can you can be a card-carrying Democrat and believe in the Constitution?
Mr. Kahn has presumably read the Constitution. How then can he remain a Democrat? How can he be part of a party that happily tramples on the principles of the Constitution to which he “clings to tightly”?
You can’t do both. Either you only think you’re a Democrat and you truly believe in the Constitution, in which case I’d recommend leaving the party. Or you really are a Democrat and you do not believe in the Constitution.
Sometimes the truth hurts.
