Thanksgiving 2017 - The Eye of a Hurricane

Image
Thanksgiving is kind of like standing in the eye of a hurricane. As more and more news stories surface of allegations of sexual misconduct, as North Korea continues to make noises like they want to blow us off the face of the map, as Congress floats yet another attempt at amnesty, we take a day to step back and count our blessings. There is so much wrong in this world. There are countless problems that we face on a near daily basis. It feels like evil is running rampant. It feels like morality and decency have taken a beating and are on their last leg. It feels like Truth is rejected. And yet, there remains a ray of hope. We live in America. The greatest country in the world. The freest country in the world. One of America’s foundational beliefs, going all the way back to the Pilgrims, was that if there’s something wrong in the world, we have not only the God-given duty, but the ability to fight against what is wrong, and stand for what is right. And with God’s help, we

That Sinking Feeling

A jolt to the chest. Muscles tense, ready to bolt. Heart starts pounding. Breaths start coming faster. Palms getting sweaty. Your eyes start darting around warily. That sick feeling in your stomach. A weight, right there in your gut. You Know What’s Coming. Anyone who’s ever told a lie knows the feeling I’m talking about. It’s when you have something to hide. Something to lose if your secret is discovered. If we’re being brutally honest, we’ve all been there at one time or another. Whether it was telling your parents you’d brushed your teeth when you hadn’t, or cheating on your a school test, these kind of secrets carry a weight. They carry a cost. This feeling intensifies a hundred fold when we see someone else get caught while our secret remains.   Bill Clinton knows this feeling. Louis C.K. knows this feeling. Harvey Weinstein knows this feeling. There’s accusations that Roy Moore may know this feeling. Anthony Weiner knows this feeling. Al Franken has felt t

The Kangaroo Court of Public Opinion

Image
Unpredictable, volatile, easily swayed, reactionary. If you were on trial, and this was the description given to your judge and jury, do you think you could count on a fair trial? The court of public opinion is all of that and more. It dangerous to say the least. Yet in this day and age of social media and instant gratification, it seems more and more, the principles of innocent until proven guilty, the rule of law, and the burden of proof being on the accuser, are being eroded. If you’re life, your career, your family can be ruined by someone making an accusation, whether it’s true or not, can it be said that we live in a country governed by the rule of law? Just the Facts I may be in a minority, but I still believe truth matters. I believe that wrongdoing should be punished according to the law. However, mere accusations cannot become convictions. It seems just about everyday, there’s some new scandal regarding sexual abuse. The fire started in Hollywood, and is now sp

#EndTruckViolenceNow

This week, New York suffered an act of terrorism . A follower of the Islamic State, using a rented truck, murdered 8 people in cold blood and injured 11 others in New York City. Let me begin by saying that our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and the families of those affected by this evil act of terrorism. While the scale of this attack is far different, one can’t help but notice the difference of coverage & reaction regarding the New York City attack when compared to the Vegas attack in September. After the Vegas attack, that was the news for at least a week afterwards. However, scrolling around news sites just days after the NYC attack, there is little to no coverage to be found. Could it be that the NYC attack doesn’t fit the narrative that many are trying to push, and therefore covering it is not an effective use of time to accomplish their goals ? #BanTheTrucks And while the volume of coverage is vastly different, so too is the content of the covera
