The Most Notable Absence - GOP Debate #7

Image
After watching the final GOP debate before the Iowa Caucus, there were far too many important issues that came up for me to address only one. So today, it’s rapid fire. Let’s begin. First off, the most talked about part of the debate - Trump’s absence. Let’s get this over with. When Trump started making noises about skipping out, my first thought was, “If he wants to be president, he’s going to have to get used to being treated unfairly!” My second thought was, “What conservative is afraid of a Fox News debate?” I understand the aversion that most Democrats have to Fox News. Of all the news stations, Fox is definitely the furthest right in comparison to the others. In other words, I can understand Clinton, Sanders and O’Malley not wanting to do a debate with Megyn Kelly moderating. I can’t understand a Republican feeling the same way. Trump’s reasoning is that he wouldn’t get a fair shake from Kelly, therefore it wasn’t worth his time. I have news for him, every Republican

Define: Conservative

I remember exactly where I was that day. I was helping a friend trim up some trees around his cabin when the announcement was made. Leaning on the pickup door with the windows down, listening to the fuzzy AM station, I remember my smile getting wider and wider as the speech was given, a hope that had faded was renewed. That was 2008. This week, Sarah Palin endorsed Donald Trump for president. Now, 2008 seems like a very, very long time ago. Over seven years ago, Sarah Palin was selected as the Vice Presidential candidate. I think there were a lot of conservatives like me who had a little faith restored after this announcement. We may not have been too excited about McCain, but maybe, just maybe, someone like Palin, a “conservative firebrand”, would even things out. Looking back, perhaps it was a misguided hope. But hindsight is 20/20. Let’s focus on the present, taking some lessons we’ve hopefully learned from the not so distant past. I have voiced some major concerns

"I Changed My Mind": State of the Union + GOP Debate #6

Image
Millions of Americans tuned in Tuesday night to hear from President Barack Obam a as he laid out what he believed to be the “State of the Union”. Millions more Americans tuned in Thursday night to hear from candidates for the GOP nomination as they each laid out their vision for America. And Wednesday night, millions of Americans tuned into see if they won the lottery. If you’re reading this, I’m assuming that you did at least two of these things. All in all, a busy week. And sadly, there’s no way to go into the kind of detail that I’d like to due the volume of all that’s happened. Therefore, I want to pose a wider question that touches on most of what has gone on this week - Is it possible to change a person’s mind? The quick answer is ‘no, not really’. As humans, we like to reserve the right to change our own mind. As Dale Carnegie put it, Obviously, the quick answer is not enough. If it was, then opinion blogs like this, talk shows, radio shows, anything opinion rel

The Big Question - Russia: Friend or Foe? Don't Ask a Democrat

Image
I haven’t seen this much about Russia in the news since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Of course, I wasn’t reading newspapers back then, but I’m sure Russia made the headlines a time or two. In case you’ve been living under a rock, the Democrats are in a frenzy lately, regarding the potential impact that Russian hacking had on the 2016 presidential election . Obama has in fact pledged to “ take action ” in retribution for what Russia has done. You may be asking, “Are you sure it’s the Democrats? The same Democrats who guffawed, mocked, ridiculed, and chided Donald Trump for even suggesting that the integrity of the United States election might be compromised? You mean the same Democrats that said he was jeopardizing democracy itself by even daring to question the legitimacy of the electoral process?” Yes. Those Democrats . As we’ve noted before here at Paineful Truth, they tend to have a bent toward hypocrisy . And the media tends to have a bent toward letting them get awa

Executive Orders: Obama vs. The Constitution

Image
The topic of executive orders is not generally one that gets many people excited. I’m here to change that. Think of it like this - do you like being free? Do you enjoy being able to work, travel, associate, and speak as you please? Now ask yourself this, do you want to stand up for what you believe? If you answered ‘‘yes’ to these questions, then the topic of executive orders should excite you to no end. John Jay, the original Chief Justice U.S. Supreme Court, once said, “Every member of the State ought diligently to read and to study the constitution of his country. . . . By knowing their rights, they will sooner perceive when they are violated and be the better prepared to defend and assert them.” John Jay So, the question becomes, do you know your Constitution? Obama made the headlines this week with new executive action on guns. Was it constitutional? And why does it matter? First, we must realize that the President of the United States of America i
