It Begins With You

Finally, someone asked the question. I’ve been dying to have this question answered by all the presidential candidates since this whole thing started nearly a year ago.
“In your opinion, what should be the functions of the federal government?”
This is basic, elementary, Government 101. This should be a mandatory field in the “signing up to run for president form”.
From the CNN Milwaukee Town Hall, March 29, 2016:
QUESTION: “In your opinion, what are the top three functions of the United States government?”
TRUMP: “Well, the greatest function of all by far is security for our nation. I would also say health care, I would also say education. I mean, there are many, many things, but I would say the top three are security, security, security.”
“...I mean, there are obviously many things, housing, providing great neighborhoods…”
Donald Trump got one out of the five correct. The federal government is in charge of our national security. But he is inexcusably and utterly wrong on every single other function that he listed. Not to mention the fact that there are not “many, many things” of which the federal government should be in charge. This is a fundamental violation of conservatism, and much more closely aligned to the beliefs of progressives.
I’m not going to go into detail on this because I already have. If you don’t understand where I’m coming from I encourage you to read back over the past articles of this blog where I explain this simply and thoroughly.
For now, I want to forget about the weakest general election candidate, and the Soviet honeymooning socialist. Put out of your mind the Benghazi/email-gate participant, and the Constitutionally conservative Texan. Forget all that and let your mind relax.
Today, I want to talk about you.
Do you know what you believe? We should not be listening to candidates to see what they think on issues so we can form an opinion on those issues. Rather, we should regard candidates like they are coming to us wanting a job. We have a checklist, they have to meet our requirements or else.
What is your checklist? What must a candidate believe? Do you have a position on international trade? What about immigration, abortion, traditional marriage, taxes, etc.?
You get the idea. Unless we know what we believe and why, what a candidate believes is irrelevant. Unless we know what we believe and why, a candidate could wrap manure in pretty paper and we’d vote for it.
Have you ever read the Constitution, the Declaration, or Washington’s Farewell Address? Can you define “progressive”, “liberal”, “conservative”, “libertarian”? How about “socialism”, “capitalism”, or “communism”? This is not merely a scholastic exercise, this is necessary to the survival of our country and freedom itself.
“Every child in America should be acquainted with his own country….As soon as he opens his lips, he should rehearse the history of his own country." ~Noah Webster, On the Education of Youth in America, 1788
Noah Webster
"A Bible and a newspaper in every house, a good school in every district--all studied and appreciated as they merit--are the principal support of virtue, morality, and civil liberty." ~Benjamin Franklin
"I know no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves, and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education. This is the true corrective of abuses of constitutional power." ~Thomas Jefferson
"If Virtue & Knowledge are diffused among the People, they will never be enslav'd. This will be their great Security." ~Samuel Adams, letter to James Warren, February 12, 1779
If you don’t know how government is supposed to work, how will you know when it is not working correctly? If you and I can’t tell the difference between a Constitutional and unconstitutional law, then what is the point of even having a Constitution?
Think of yourself as a policeman, the government is the criminal, and the Constitution is the law of the land. As a citizen, your job is to make sure that the “criminal” obeys and follows the law. However, if you pay no or little attention to the “criminal” you will not know if or when he breaks the law. Additionally, even if you are watching closely, if you do not know the law by heart, you will have no basis for prosecuting any crime committed.
Know your history. Know your Constitution. Know your God-given rights. This is about you. Putting America back on the right track begins with the person looking back at you in the mirror. And it begins today.
