And Now, The Work Begins - A Price Worth Paying
Donald J. Trump is now officially the President of the United States of America. Very few ever honestly thought this day would come. But here we are.
Through the last 8 years, America once again demonstrated its indomitable spirit in the face of overwhelming odds. And we cautiously, yet optimistically look forward to (at least) the next 4 years as a time of action. A time where things that have been spoken of are finally put into motion. A time where empty words are given power through courageous action.
I joined many Americans in shedding a happy tear on Inauguration Day, my heart swelling with pride in this God-blessed nation. One of the greatest things to see was a new President who, I believe, truly wants what is best for America.
However, Trump’s dedication to the Constitution and our founding principles remains to be seen. It most certainly has been spoken, and quite eloquently, in the President’s inaugural acceptance speech, from the steps of the Capitol building, .
The things Trump lined out in his speech - a government run by the people and for the people, American interests first, patriotism, dedication to American prosperity, unity, trust in God - all of these are wonderful pieces that together make up America. But as we’ve seen countless times, it is one thing to say, it is another to do.
President Trump took an oath. He swore that he would “...faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and…” and would to the best of his “...ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
Election 2016 was exhausting, excruciating, and draining. It was divisive, acidic, and painful. But despite all that and all the effort expended, winning an election is only the beginning. The real work starts now.
The new President had it right when he tweeted on Inauguration Day: “It all begins today...The movement continues - the work begins!”
Now that President Trump has taken his oath of office, it is up to you and me to hold him to that oath. It is up to you and me to hold each member of Congress to their oath. It is up to you and me to hold each elected official to their oath. And all those oaths had one thing in common - the protection of, and dedication to, the Constitution of the United States.
Politicians will always stray from their oaths given enough time. That is why it is up to We the People to “bind them down with chains to the Constitution”. It is up to We the People to be always on guard against infringements on our freedom.
“Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.” And it is a price well worth paying.
