I Have a Confession to Make...
In 4 days, it will all be over. And yet, it will be just beginning.
Whatever decision the American people make on Tuesday, November 8 will influence the course of our nation for some time to come. And as it all comes down, as things get real, I have a confession I must make.
The Painful Truth
Since the primary ended, and all hope of a constitutional conservative winning the White House was gone, I have been hoping, praying, desperately wanting one thing. I was ashamed of it, but now is the time for openness and honesty. Now is the time for the painful truth.
There, I said it.
Now, you may be asking, why don’t you just vote for him then? Well the answer to that question may surprise you.
Because if I’m honest, it’s not that Donald Trump is an unprincipled, deceptive liberal at heart who says whatever happens to be politically expedient at the moment. It’s not that he’s an immoral, serial philanderer/adulterer who disrespects women. It’s not even that he’s held more positions than a yoga instructor on issues from abortion to gun rights.
While those things are abhorrent (and not to be tolerated in your town’s dogcatcher let alone president of the United States) the real thing stopping me from voting for Trump is his supporters.
It’s Not You, It’s Them
Again, I want to make perfectly clear (as I have previously) that I make a distinction between a Trump voter and a Trump supporter. A Trump voter believes they were left with an awful choice between two evils. A Trump supporter has been enthusiastically behind Trump even while there were other good options.
Anytime I get close to deciding to vote for Trump, Trump supporters talk me out of it.* They defend his liberal policies, his flip-flops, his immorality.
Would it be any different if he was in office? Would Trump supporters stand up against Trump when, as president, he proposed universal government mandated/funded healthcare? Would they oppose his continued funding of Planned Parenthood?
Having a liberal, RINO as a president is one thing. Having enthusiastic supporters of that president who will defend him and destroy any and all opposition no matter what, is a very different thing.
Maintain Your Sanity in 3 Easy Steps
Three things we must remember:
1. America Survives This
No matter who wins, our nation remains, our Constitution remains (however precariously). We still have principles to fight for, there will be other battles, and no matter what we cannot give up.
2. Neither Trump nor Clinton Represent America
The population of the United States is 318.9 million. Trump got 14 million votes out of the nearly 32 million votes cast. Clinton got 16.9 million votes out of nearly 31 million votes cast. That means 30.9 million ill-advised individuals (less than ten percent of our population) actually wanted these people to be president. They will get more votes in the general, however, less than ten percent of Americans saw these two as their first choice.
Believe me, that is the one fact that allows me to sleep at night. That, and the fact that there’s a new season of Sherlock coming soon.
3. The President is Not the King
We have three branches of government for a reason. If one is taken over by progressive liberals who completely ignore the Constitution, they can be put in check by the other branches. The White House is not everything and maintaining a reasonable, principled, conservative voice in Congress is vital.
We have a federalist system for a reason. If our federal government is overrun by progressive liberals who completely ignore the Constitution, sanity can be retained by principled, conservative voices in our state governments.
We have a Republic for a reason. If politicians have become progressive, liberal, Constitution-crushing hacks, then We the People have the ability to get involved and bring America back to her principles.
There’s more than one election taking place Tuesday. Conservatives are on your ballot, you just have to look down, below the presidential picks. You must vote the down ballot, Congress and the states must stand strong on principles if we hope to survive the next 4 years as a Constitutional Republic.
Hold Onto This
We are where we are. There is no changing what is. The only question remaining is what are we going to do about it?
